This research employed a mixed-methods research design that combines qualitative and quantitative research methods to address the research questions from multiple perspectives. The quantitative component of this study involves the use of surveys and questionnaires to gather data on students' attitudes and motivation towards English language learning based on Gardner's (2010) Socio-Educational Model and Deci and Ryan's (2000) Self-Determination Theory, ensuring that the constructs of attitudes and motivation are measured reliably and validly. The qualitative component involves conducting interviews and focus groups with students, teachers, and other stakeholders to gain deeper insights into the factors influencing attitudes and motivation towards English language learning. The respondents of the study were 27 respondents from the Malay ethnicity and comprised of 12 males and 15 females. The findings showed home environment and limited interaction with English-speaking people shaped the respondent attitude about English usage. In terms of motivation, all respondents had a good attitude and a strong desire to learn English. Cultural identification and socioeconomic status influence language choices and attitude about English as a medium of instruction. This study is significance because understanding the attitudes of primary school students towards English language learning is crucial for developing effective strategies to enhance language proficiency from the early stages of education. More research could be done using a more rigorous research methodology to uncover construct of learner motivation and attitude that could be utilised to plan appropriate learning intervention. |
