Abstract : UNIRAZAK Library |
The increasing prevalence of diabetes and obesity among Malaysia’s younger population, driven by high sucrose intake, poses a critical public health concern. This study explores factors influencing dietary habits, with a focus on sucrose consumption, aiming to identify strategies to promote healthier eating behaviours. Grounded in the alarming rise of diabetes rates in Malaysia, which reached 18.3% in 2019, this research investigates the role of parental influence, marketing strategies, early dietary interventions, and self-efficacy in shaping the dietary patterns of adolescents and young adults. The study adopts a quantitative cross-sectional design, with data collected from a sample of overweight and obese individuals aged 16-40. Using a stratified random sampling method, the research examines the impact of each variable on sucrose intake and healthy dietary habits, employing IBM SPSS for data analysis. The results highlight that parental influence and self-efficacy are the most significant predictors of healthy dietary behaviour. Young adults with strong parental guidance and higher self-efficacy were more likely to make healthier food choices and reduce their sucrose intake. In contrast, marketing strategies and early dietary interventions had a less substantial effect on long-term dietary habits. These findings underscore the importance of family-based interventions and the need to foster self-confidence in making healthy food choices from a young age. The study offers practical implications for policymakers, educators, and healthcare professionals to design more effective strategies in combating dietrelated diseases through targeted interventions for Malaysia’s youth. |
