This research aims to explore the factors affecting the retention of seafarers, particularly within the Malaysia International Shipping Corporation (MISC). Despite the crucial role seafarers play in global maritime operations, retaining skilled personnel remains a significant challenge due to high turnover rates. The existing literature has largely focused on the general factors influencing employee retention across industries, but there is a noticeable gap in understanding how specific variables such as job satisfaction, working conditions, career development opportunities, and work-life balance uniquely impact seafarer retention in the maritime sector. This study addresses this gap by examining these factors through a quantitative approach, using structured questionnaires administered to 690 seafarers employed by MISC The regression analysis reveals that job satisfaction (B = 0.29, Beta = 0.262, p < 0.01), working conditions (B = 0.208, Beta = 0.177, p < 0.01), career development (B = 0.254, Beta = 0.24, p < 0.01), and work-life balance (B = 0.294, Beta = 0.268, p < 0.01) all significantly contribute to seafarer retention. These results confirm the significance of the independent variables in influencing retention rates. The t-values for job satisfaction (t = 6.913), working conditions (t = 5.025), career development (t = 6.176), and work-life balance (t = 7.677) further establish that these relationships are statistically significant. The findings indicate that improved working conditions, particularly safety and living standards onboard, along with opportunities for professional growth, directly enhance seafarers’ commitment to staying with the organization. In conclusion, addressing these factors is essential for reducing turnover rates and maintaining a stable and experienced workforce in the maritime industry. The policy implications of this research are clear: MISC and other maritime organizations should implement targeted strategies to improve job satisfaction, working conditions, and career development, while promoting a better work-life balance to enhance overall retention. These insights can guide managerial decisions and contribute to the development of more effective human resource management practices within the maritime sector. |
